Does drinking alcohol stop antibiotics from working?

We can say in practice that alcohols do not affect the antibiotics works of the body but we can say that the results of drinking alcohol are same as for the antibiotics like laziness, dizziness, vomiting, stomach problems etc. it becomes more disaster when you in take both at the same time.

Some well known antibiotics such as Flagyl, Tindamax and Bactrim should not be used with alcohols because they have more severe reactions.

Using the alcohol with mentioned medicines can cause you loose motions, nausea, vomiting, headaches and heart sinking. You have to keep in mind that some mouth washes also have the alcohols in them so avoid them as well when you are on the antibiotic using routines.

As we discussed before that alcohol has nothing to do with the working of antibiotics but it just slows down the process of their reactions. So when you are on certain treatment, try to drink less alcohol. The reaction that antibiotics produce in the result of combination is called the antabuse.

The alcohol stays longer in the body that is why it affects the antibiotic working. It slows down the metabolism system of the body and that is the reason for the antibiotics reaction slows down.

The long term usage of alcohol produces some enzymes that when combined with the antibiotics make harmful substances for the body. We can say it is the reason for the alcoholic addicted patients to recover late from their usual diseases. Alcohol also intensifies the calming effects of some antibiotics.

As we all know the antibiotics have side effects that are harmful for the body system. The alcohol has variance of side effects as well. So when you are an addicted alcoholic person, you have to hold on your emotions for the use of alcohol if you are on antibiotics.

Otherwise, the reaction of both the alcohol and antibiotics will lead you towards the unbearable results. You can face the fainting or low blood pressure as a result of their combination.

So try to avoid using them together as this combination can be really harmful to your body. You have to perceive doctor if you get any reaction on the behalf of using antibiotic and alcohols at the same time.

Some antibiotic medicines have high intensity to the sleepiness. Alcohol leads you to the dizziness. So if you somehow get bad reaction of the combination then you can ever lead your way to death.

Also please note what heavy drinking and antibiotics not compatible in any way and can lead to death. Read more about moderate alcohol abuse and how alcoholism develops.

I get next question : What is the score with alcohol and prozac? It safe to consume 3 or 5 pints over a week? I need it because it would be nice to socialise abit.

One of Prozac’s side effect is alcohol intolerance. Aside from obvious mental effects of alcohol – Prozac & Alcohol can induce something called “Serotonin Syndrome”. “Serotonin syndrome” is not spontaneous drug reaction, it more like a consequence of excess serotonergic activity at central nervous system & peripheral serotonin receptors. This excess serotonin activity produces a specific spectrum of clinical findings which can range from barely perceptible up to fatal.
So in truth the chances of concomitanuse of Alcohol and Prozac causing adverse reactions are not very common, but it present!

Same things related to Zoloft and to Celexa which used for anxiety treatment. With MAOI class of drugs (like Nardil) – any alcohol consumption can lead to coma or to death.

So, advice of medical community is that what it is an avoidable & unnecessary risk.

Also on psychological note : Alcohol is depressant. It does not make sense to take (Antidepressant) Prozac and drink depressant.
Alcohol also has been positively linked to depressions. No one with any type of depressions or anxieties should consider drinking alcohol!

Take a note what better not consume any drugs with alcohol, in few cases it can lead to death of drinker. When effects can be small for person who drinking moderately, it can be deadly for heavy drinkers. Check my new article about alcoholism stages and what is moderate drinking and alcoholism.

Alcohol is a colorless impulsive combustible liquid, synthesized by fermentation of starches and sugars. The chemical formula of alcohol is C2H5OH, and it is also term as ethanol, ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol and is extensively used, both in pure and denatured forms as solvent, cleaning solutions, in drugs, explosives, and exhilarating beverages. In other words alcohol is the any form of hydroxyl compounds and is the simplest derivatives of the saturated hydrocarbons of CnH2n+1OH general formula, including ethanol and methanol.

Alcohol is the class of organic compounds which have one or additional hydroxyl groups (-OH) appended to one or other more carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain. Representing the number of supplementary substituent groups on carbon atom by R, alcohol are categorized as primary alcohol (RCH2OH), secondary alcohol (R2CHOH), or tertiary alcohol (R3COH). Several alcohols are found in nature and are important intermediates in synthesis of further compounds due to the distinctive chemical reactions of hydroxyl groups of the alcohol.

Some of the chemical properties of alcohol includes that the primary alcohols give up aldehydes on oxidation and the ketones by the secondary alcohols and the tertiary alcohols breaks down. On reaction with carboxylic acids esters are produced that can be converted to ethers as well as olefins. Some of the worth mentioning products of such reactions are detergents, fats, emulsifiers, waxes, emollients, plasticizers, lubricants, and spraying agents. Grain alcohol or Ethanol and wood alcohol or methanol is the best alcohols containing only one hydroxyl group. Ethylene glycol and antifreeze are the glycols having two hydroxyl groups and three in glycerol, and three or other in polyols.

Alcohols normally have smell that dangles in nasal passages and the alcoholic beverages are consuming by the humans which is ethanol form. Man is consuming alcoholic beverages for different hygienic, religious, dietary, medicinal, and recreational purposes. Alcohol consumption is beneficial if taken in little amount and in proper time but if people starts consuming it frequently and becoming addiction is very harmful to health.

Intoxication or addiction on alcoholic beverages lead to acute respiratory malfunction or death as well as chronic utilization has medical consequences. Other alcoholic beverages produce more toxics and require longer duration in metabolizing in the body. The worst effect of alcoholic beverages is in case of the wood alcohol or methanol which can be oxidized by an enzyme in the live called alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes forming poisonous formaldehyde resulting to blindness or fatality.

Administration of ethanol is the only solution to prevent and treat formaldehyde toxicity on methanol consumption but all people are not aware of the fact. Ethanol acts as substrate preventing methanol from binding to alcohol dehydrogenase. Alcohol is usually taken in social occasions like a party or meal and in such occasions people mix with some amount of water to avoid overindulging.

At the same time people undergoing weight loss treat must refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages as it contains a soaring concentration of detrimental sugars and bare calories and alcohol consumption generally drives to compromise ones habits, that might disturbed the control over certain foods. Therefore the alcoholic beverage consumers must always try to stick on self control and restraint from over consumption.

I came across an article from the British Liver Trust entitled ‘Louisa Fryer – Give up alcohol for a year‘. I’ve come across a lot of articles like this before and although this article was very short, it seemed to hit home with a lot of things with me.

I have been thinking more and more about giving up drinking for good recently. It’s not uncommon for people from the UK to get drunk at least twice a week. A recent campaign had the tagline ‘It’s not that we’re drinking, it’s how we’re drinking’. Never a truer line has been said.

First of all, let me establish that I’m not an alcoholic, however I have been concerned more and more about the things in my life which are being affected by drinking. For example, I train 3-4 times a week In Taekwondo and go to the gym a few times too. Whilst I would like to train at the weekend, I simply can’t because I’m hungover from the night before!! Another reason I’m considering giving up drinking is the fact I’m gonna bored with it – I mean, I’m 28. Getting drunk at the weekend is what I’ve done since I became an adult!!

However, the biggest reason I think I should give it up is because I don’t know how to drink responsibly. Binge drinking is all I know, sad but true!!!

What do you do?

Louisa also brought up one of the most important questions that arises when someone thinks about giving up drinking. What do you do?

What does a non-drinker who goes out socially think? What is their mindset, how do they do it? I am about to find out.

Am I strong enough to go out socially every weekend without drinking? I’d like to think that I am but time will tell.

Could you give up drinking for a year?

You can check out Louisa’s progress here.
